Opportunism
Saturday, 08 March 2008

We all know things are bad in the pub trade but there does seem to be some opportunism going on. A pub that we have played a number of times before has recently put bookings in the hands of a wannbe impressario/agent. When I contacted him, he offered us a gig for £30 less than we have ever been paid to play there. When I told him this, his reaction was "take it or leave it". If it's all the same to you, I'll leave it!

It also appears that if you get the runaround about bookings or money from an existing landlord/lady/manager, the chances are that things are about to go pear shaped. Recent examples include the Caroline, Bensham Jockey, George Stephenson and Magnesia Bank.

I must stress that this is not about greed. The fees charged by bands are modest by any standard and costs such as insurance, fuel and gear are not going down. If bands are good enough to play, they are good enough to pay!

Recent Gigs
Saturday, 08 March 2008

After very poor audiences in January and early February, recent gigs at the Station Redcar, Masons Arms Amble, the Albion Bill Quay and, last night at the Daisy Hill have been much better. The smoking ban and general lack of meney seems to be keeping people away.

Buddy Whittington - 5 March 2008
Thursday, 06 March 2008
Time off for me and Wendell saw us at the Cluny last night to see Buddy Whittington. Buddy is the guitarist with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and I was looking forward to see what he was like with his own stuff. It was excellent! Since I bought his CD at the gig, I'm in danger of wearing it out. All but one songs was written by Buddy and cover a wide spectrum of rhythm and blues. Check out buddy's site at where you can hear some excerpts at www.myspace.com/buddywhittington.

Three Horse Shoes - 18 January 2008
Saturday, 19 January 2008
This was our first time here but I'm sure it won’t be our last. A good sized audience for the third week in January included Steve and Kerry from last week's gig. We had a good time and the band is tightening up as Wendell, our new drummer, gets to grips with things. Bill came to the gig via god knows where thanks to ace satellite navigation. A punter came up to us and asked why we never played at Annfield Plain Cricket Club. I told him this was a very good question. I explained that we were booked by Steve last year (27 May 2007) but that gig was cancelled (because of a cricket match). Despite phoning Steve a number of times, he appears not have wanted to rebook us.  So the punter said that he reckoned we should get a booking and he would have a word. But I won’t hold my breath!

Steve's Birthday - 12 January 2008
Sunday, 13 January 2008
Recovering from a bout of something nasty (wor lass says it's "Man Flu"), I headed off to Tanfield for a private function gig - Steve's 50th Birthday. His lass Kerry booked us last month and I was keen not to let him down.  In any event the do was a cracker. Good food provided by the lovely Kerry and a very appreciative audience. Quite a few songs that we don't do that often got an outing. A good night was had by all and especially the Pack Horse Ladies Choir. If Steve has started on the numerous bottles he received as presents, I expect he'll read this a week on Wednesday. Happy Birthday Steve!
